Talk to the tower without freezing.

Cloudy Tower builds radio practice around your home airport. Hear the controller, key the mic, say your reply out loud, and see what you got right in seconds. Then it's easy in the airplane.

One email when it's on the App Store. Nothing else.

You're on the list. We'll email you once, on launch day.

The first call in Cloudy Tower: Frederick Tower asks you to say again your call sign, with a big amber hold-to-talk button.
How it works

Practice the exact calls you'll make on your next flight.

Generic drills don't help when the tower says your runway, your taxiway and your callsign at full speed. Cloudy Tower uses your field.

  1. 01

    Pick your home airport

Search for it or use your location once. Runways, frequencies and nearby fields come from FAA data, and today's wind from the nearest METAR picks the runway in use.

  2. 02

    Hear the call

Tower, Ground and Approach each have their own voice, played through a radio effect you can turn up from clear to a busy frequency.

  3. 03

Key the mic and say it

Hold to talk. Your iPhone turns your words into text and grades wording, order and completeness. Drop a “hold short” and it doesn't pass.

Ground gives a taxi clearance; your kneeboard has boxes for the runway, hold short and route.
The debrief: a score of 69, missing the callsign, with what to say and the AIM paragraph it comes from.
The course

From first word to checkride.

Eight stages, 106 lessons and 661 calls, in the order you'll meet them in training. Each lesson goes: learn it, try it with help, practise it, then prove it with no hints. Already flying? Tell it where you are and it opens the stages you've done.

Instrument track

Clearances, climb via, missed approaches. For after your private.

In the cockpit

Hear it like the radio. Write it like a pilot.

Kneeboard

Copy the clearance, then read it back.

From Stage 2 on, the controller's words disappear. You copy them with a finger into boxes made for the call (taxi, takeoff and landing, vectors, CRAFT, ATIS), with a shorthand guide the first time. The debrief shows what you wrote and what you missed.

Voices and Listen

Real-sounding controllers, not a robot.

Each facility has its own voice, run through a radio effect at four levels: Clear, Radio, Busy and Real. In Listen, a practice frequency plays your airport's traffic. Tap any phrase to decode it, then say it yourself.

Listen: a Frederick practice frequency, with tower and pilot transmissions to tap and decode.

Five minutes before your lesson

Today picks the next lesson and brings back the calls you got wrong, spaced out until they stick.

Works in the hangar

Lessons, voices for the main course and grading all run without signal. Only weather and new airport voices need a connection.

FAQ

Questions

Does this replace my flight instructor?

No. Cloudy Tower is a training aid. It gives you reps between lessons so your instructor can spend airplane time on flying. Always follow your CFI, current FAA publications and the controller on the actual frequency.

Which airports does it know?

About 4,700 US airports from the FAA's own airport data, updated every 28 days. Lessons use your field's real runways and frequencies, the fields near it, and the closest towered airport for your first tower calls.

Is my voice recorded or sent anywhere?

No. You talk only while you hold the button, and your iPhone turns the speech into text to grade it (on the device where it can, otherwise through Apple's speech service). We never receive your audio or what you said. How your data is handled

I'm already partway through training.

Tell the app where you are (taking lessons, soloed, private pilot, instrument rated, or getting back into flying) and it starts you at the right stage. Earlier stages stay open for review.

Do I need an account?

No. There's nothing to sign up for. Your progress lives on your iPhone, and Pro is tied to your Apple Account, so Restore Purchases brings it back on a new phone.

How is it graded?

Against the phraseology in the AIM, AC 90-66C and the controllers' handbook, JO 7110.65. Safety-critical items like runway numbers, hold-short and your callsign cap the score if they're wrong, and every correction shows its source.

Android? iPad?

iPhone first, on iOS 26. Join the list and we'll tell you if that changes.

I used the old Cloudy Tower website. What happens to it?

The website practice app has closed, and the iPhone app replaces it with a rebuilt course. Progress from the website doesn't carry over. To delete your old account, see Delete your account. Any questions: support@cloudytower.com.
